MLB Picks and Player Props August 27, 2025

Athletics team total over 4.5 runs (-115) vs. Tigers

I like the Athletics a lot tonight against Tigers starter Casey Mize. While his overall numbers remain solid, he has looked like a different pitcher in the second half of the season. After posting a stellar 3.15 ERA with a .301 wOBA over his first 88.2 innings, Mize has struggled since mid-July, carrying a 5.34 ERA, a .361 wOBA, and a 4.17 FIP.

He now faces an Athletics lineup that matches up well against his primary pitches—the four-seam fastball and slider—which he throws a combined 60% of the time. Against the four-seam, Oakland’s projected lineup owns a .371 wOBA and a .214 ISO. Against the slider, they’ve been even stronger, with a .393 wOBA and a .300 ISO.

Given Mize’s recent struggles and the Athletics’ success against his two go-to pitches, I love their chances of going over their team total tonight.

Chase Dollander under 14.5 outs recorded (+115) vs. Houston Astros

Dollander doesn’t typically work deep into games. Of his 18 starts, he’s recorded fewer than 14.5 outs in 10 of them. One of those outings came against this Astros offense, when he lasted just 2.2 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits. While that start did come at Coors Field, I’d argue this Astros lineup is even stronger now. This time around, they feature Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa (.396 wOBA, 157 wRC+ since joining Houston).

Dollander’s primary pitch—the four-seam fastball—continues to get crushed. Opposing hitters own a .515 wOBA and .212 ISO against it. Given that profile and the upgrades in Houston’s lineup, another short outing feels very much in play tonight.

Byron Buxton 2+ total bases (+100) vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Buxton is always a force against left-handed pitching, and 2025 is no different. Coming into tonight, he owns a .391 wOBA with a .320 ISO and a 153 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. After getting the night off yesterday, Buxton should be back atop the Twins lineup against Eric Lauer. Lauer has been good, but his arsenal contains a bunch of pitches Buxton has handled well. Getting his play at even money is one of the biggest appeals for me, especially with him averaging two total bases per game and his success against lefties.

Good luck with your MLB picks and player props for August 27, 2025!
