SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second straight season, the USC Upstate baseball program sees a former Spartan selected in the Major League Baseball draft as Mathieu Curtis saw his name called by Atlanta, going to the Braves in the 14th round with the 427th pick.

A two-season standout on the bump, the Tega Cay, S.C. native earned 12 wins for the Spartans, pitching to a .750 winning percentage over 135.1 innings. His career win total ranks eighth in the program’s Division I era (2007-pres.) while his career winning percentage slots third in the era.

A member of the 2023 Big South All-Freshman Team, Curtis collected seven victories en route to the honor, earning a Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week nod and three Big South Freshman of the Week selections. Behind his 7-2 record, his .778 winning percentage during the campaign ranks as the sixth-best single-season mark in program history.

With his selection, Curtis becomes the 25th former Spartan to be taken in MLB’s June Amateur Draft.
