With a month to go in the 2025 MLB season, the teams who are fighting for Wild Card spots and division titles will get more intense. The Philadelphia Phillies are currently sitting pretty atop the NL East. For Phillies fans, it’s World Series title or bust. However, I don’t share the same sentiment. There’s no denying that this team has some of the best players. Unfortunately, and to be fair, it’s been nearly two decades since they have won a World Series title and haven’t been able to accomplish this feat yet. They had that opportunity back in 2022 but failed to take advantage of it. We’ll just have to see how far they’ll go in the Postseason. Will the Phillies finally overcome that obstacle this year? Only time will tell, because the Postseason is full of surprises.
One thing that irritates me with this team is that any time they struggle, you see and hear at least one player saying the following: That’s baseball. It’s something that Phillies fans and baseball fans in general have noticed and are irritated of that excuse. I feel like they say that as an excuse and as a coping mechanism to downplay their lackluster on-field performances. It’s not a positive mindset to have and that’s one of the reasons why they’re not a championship team. That’s just the truth of the matter. Before the regular season began, I predicted that the Phillies wouldn’t make it to the playoffs. They can win as many NL East titles they want, but the results will always be the same: another early playoff exit. You can’t have the same manager and players, expecting different results. After they lost to their division rivals, the New York Mets in last year’s NLDS, the window of the Phillies winning a World Series title has closed. In fact, they haven’t had much success of winning games at Citi Field. Changes need to be made in the Phillies lineup, and I predict that Rob Thomson will be fired at season’s end. Even with the acquisition of closer Jhoan Duran and Zack Wheeler being out for the remainder of the season, this team will still suffer an early exit from the playoffs.
I really want to believe in them, but in the last three seasons, they continue to do the same things. What do I mean by that? They lack discipline at the plate, swinging at first pitches and going for the long balls. Even if they do make it in the playoffs, they’ll experience the same issues.
In order for the Phillies to be taken seriously as a championship team, changes need to be made. They need a manager who has a backbone, has a fiery attitude, and actually cares about winning. Rob Thomson, in my opinion, is too laid back and delusional of why this team has not been up to par in the last three seasons. He gives off an “everything is fine” attitude and this kind of logic has been the Achilles Heel of the Phillies. Even their own fans are frustrated with them. Honestly, I’m tired of the excuses from these players. The That’s Baseball excuse has gotten old and tiring. Until the Phillies learn how to have more patience and discipline at the plate and show consistency on the field, they’re not a championship caliber team. They should take a page out of the 2008 team and take notes. In closing, I don’t have much faith in this team and also, I don’t believe they’ll win the World Series this year. Things need to change and fast. Otherwise, they’ll endure years of disappointing seasons and early playoff exits.
If you’re a Phillies fan, what do you think about this team’s performance so far this season? Do you think that they’ll ever win a World Series title with the current roster?
