Wednesday notes…
MILESTONE INCOMING: Today’s game will be the Cubs’ 2,000th as the home team since Opening Day of 2000. They have won 1,066 and lost 933, for a winning percentage of .533. From 1901, first year of the Modern Era, through 1999, their percentage was .547 (4,203-3,480-52). This is the Cubs’ 1,997th game at Wrigley Field, as they were the host for one game in Tokyo in 2000 and two games there to start this season. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
SWEEP INFO: This is the 72nd series between the Cubs and Marlins. The Cubs have swept nine series, all of three games, most recently their fourth at Miami, in 2019. Their sweeps at home were in 1993, 1998, 2000, 2016 and 2018. The Cubs won the first two games and lost the third in seven series, including at home in 2006, 2014, 2017, 2022 and 2023. Jameson Taillon’s last start was pretty bad, with four home runs served up to the Mets. So let’s forget that one ever happened, shall we?
One of Taillon’s best starts was his outing against Miami April 19, 2024 at Wrigley Field. Unfortunately, that’s largely irrelevant because that was before the Marlins’ big selloff. Most of the Miami players in that game aren’t on the team anymore. Just two of them, Nick Fortes and Jesus Sanchez, have ever faced Taillon, and are 0-for-4. More just like that, please.
Ryan Weathers is another former No. 1 pick (Padres, seventh overall in 2018) who has mostly washed out. A lot of that is due to injuries. He missed a chunk of last year with a finger injury and this is his first 2025 start due to shoulder issues.
His last start against the Cubs was June 4, 2023 in San Diego, but again, many of those guys are gone from the Cubs now. No current Cub has faced him more than six times.
Weathers is the son of David Weathers, a 19-year MLB veteran who pitched in 28 games for the Cubs in 2001. His pitch selection chart below is from last year.
