When the Yankees traded for Juan Soto in 2024, Trent Grisham was hardly mentioned. At that time, insiders said he was simply included as part of the financial balance of the deal with the Padres. Meanwhile, in return, San Diego got Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, Kyle Higashioka, and prospect Drew Thorpe.
While Juan Soto moved on from the Yankees after a stellar season to sign a record-breaking deal with the New York Mets, Trent Grisham continues to quietly prove his value in New York.
After the game, MLB insider Bob Nightengale shed light on how the trade was viewed inside between Grisham, the Padres, and the Yankees.
“Juan Soto hit 41 homers in 576 at-bats for the Yankees after being traded by the Padres. Trent Grisham has hit 35 homers in 578 at-bats for the Yankees after being traded by the Padres,” Nightengale wrote on X. “They were in the same trade, only Soto was wanted and Grisham was a salary dump.”
On Wednesday night, Grisham hit a leadoff home run to kick off the Yankees’ 11-2 win vs. the Washington Nationals.

Juan Soto struggled with the Mets at the start of the season. However, he has picked up the pace. Across 130 games, he is slashing .251/.390/.492 with 32 home runs and 78 RBIs. The former Yankee is posting a 4.6 WAR, which was expected, considering the amount he is earning per season.
Trent Grisham, on the other hand, is punching well above his weight when you stack his numbers against his paycheck. He has already put up a 3.1 WAR, only 1.5 wins behind Soto, while making just $5 million a year. The 28-year-old is having a career season, slashing .248/.353/.471 with 26 homers and 51 RBI over 116 games.
While the Mets certainly do not regret splashing over $700 million for Joto, it seems the Yankees are getting more bang for their buck from Grisham than the Mets are from Soto.
