CINCINNATI (WKRC) – For the first time in the 2025 MLB season the Cincinnati Reds were swept in a series, losing the third of three straight to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Wednesday. They also made some unfortunate history in the process.
Shohei Ohtani struck out a season-high nine Reds batters in his five innings of work, on the way to his first pitching victory of the year. Jack Dreyer struck out two batters in the sixth inning, Just Wrobleski punched out a pair in the seventh inning, and both Edgardo Henriquez and Blake Treinen struck out the side in their respective innings. In all, Los Angeles pitchers struck out a franchise-record 19 batters for a nine-inning game, per The Associated Press.
TJ Friedl was the only one of the ten Reds batters on the night to not strike out.
Per Joel Luckhaupt, the 19 strikeouts in a nine-inning game is also a Reds franchise record. He also clarified that Randy Johnson struck out 20 Reds batters in nine innings on May of 2001, but that game went to extra innings; the Reds would collectively strike out 21 times against the Diamondbacks.
Adding to the frustration, the Reds dropped 4.5 games behind the New York Mets in the chase for the final National League Wild Card spot.
