The New York Mets open a four-game series tonight at Citi Field against the Miami Marlins.
It’s been a strong week for New York. They just swept the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game set, trimming their NL East deficit to four games. The story of this surge isn’t just rookie Nolan McLean’s stellar pitching — it’s also the Mets’ red-hot offense, which averaged more than eight runs per game against Philadelphia.
The Marlins send Adam Mazur to the mound tonight. Just recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville, Mazur made one big league start earlier this year, allowing four runs in 5.2 innings. He struggled in his rookie season with the San Diego Padres in 2024, posting a 7.49 ERA over eight starts. This year in Triple-A, he’s recorded a 4.36 ERA across 22 appearances.
For the Mets, Clay Holmes gets the ball. The converted closer is 11–6 with a 3.60 ERA. After a rough July, Holmes has shown improvement in August despite some inconsistency. He’s leaned more heavily on his sinker this month, throwing it nearly 50% of the time. That adjustment has paid off: batters are hitting just .262 against it in August compared to .326 in July and .333 in June.
Holmes has already faced Miami twice this season, in back-to-back starts in April. He allowed one run in 4.2 innings the first time out, but surrendered four runs over 5.1 innings in the second.
Prediction
Expect the Mets’ bats to jump on Mazur early, giving Holmes and the bullpen a comfortable cushion against a below-average Marlins offense.
Prediction: Mets 6, Marlins 3
