The Chicago Cubs look to avoid a sweep this afternoon as they wrap up their three-game series with the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.
San Francisco rolled to a 12–3 win last night, powered by two home runs from Rafael Devers, who went 4-for-4 with five RBIs. The Giants’ bullpen held it down after rookie Carson Whisenhunt exited after five innings, having allowed the Cubs’ only three runs.
Chicago turns to left-hander Shota Imanaga in the finale. He enters with an 8–6 record and a 3.03 ERA, including a 2.33 ERA over four August starts. In his last outing, Imanaga held the Milwaukee Brewers to two runs over seven innings but took the loss due to lack of run support.
Opposing him will be right-hander Logan Webb, who has quietly put together another strong season. Webb comes in at 12–9 with a 3.13 ERA. After a rocky July, he has rebounded with an outstanding August, posting a 2.13 ERA in four starts. He has allowed one run or fewer in three of those outings.
Despite last night’s defeat, the Cubs remain 6.5 games behind the division-leading Brewers, who also lost on Wednesday. Chicago also holds a 1.5-game edge over the San Diego Padres for the top Wild Card spot.
As for the Giants, winners of four straight, they remain seven games behind the New York Mets, who are also riding a three-game win streak. To make the playoffs, the Giants will not only need to keep on winning, but also for the Mets to start losing again.
Prediction
Expect a low-scoring game decided by one or two runs. It’ll likely come down to bullpen execution and late-game swings — and misses.
Prediction: Cubs 3, Giants 2
