The New York Mets play the third game of their four-game series against the Miami Marlins this afternoon in Flushing.
It was Fireworks Night last night at Citi Field. And there are plenty of fireworks during the game itself.
For the second time this week, the Mets scored in double digits. Earlier in the week, they put up 13 runs in the first game of their sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Last night, they topped that with a 19-run outburst, powered by six home runs, including two from Brandon Nimmo. Rookie Jonah Tong made his MLB debut and impressed, allowing just one earned run with six strikeouts over five innings.
This afternoon, the Mets turn to a veteran arm in David Peterson. The lefty is 8–5 with a 3.18 ERA this season, though his numbers have dipped in August, where he has posted a 4.66 ERA across five starts. Most of the damage came in a rough outing against the Atlanta Braves.
Against Miami, however, Peterson has been solid. In his only start versus the Marlins this year, he held them to two runs over six innings.
Miami sends Edward Cabrera to the mound. He enters at 7–7 with a 3.32 ERA. He’s been sharp over his last seven starts, putting up a 2.76 ERA.
Earlier this month, Cabrera limited the New York Yankees’ lineup to just one run on two hits across six innings. He’s also recorded multiple double-digit strikeout games in August.
