LOS ANGELES — Dodgers Right-hander Tyler Glasnow has not allowed a hit through five innings, and the Diamondbacks and Dodgers are scoreless through 4 1/2 innings on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Glasnow has faced one batter over the minimum through five innings, the lone baserunner coming when he hit Ketel Marte with a with a slider with one out in the fourth inning.

Diamondbacks left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez has not been as dominant as Glasnow but he has matched him with scoreless innings. Rodriguez has given two hits and two walks in four innings, striking out three.

Glasnow has five strikeouts in five innings.

Ketel Marte is starting at designated hitter for the second time in as many days as he deals with “right forearm discomfort,” manager Torey Lovullo said on Saturday, Aug. 30.

“He didn’t ask (to DH), but I felt like it was the best way to get this thing calmed down a little bit and allow him just to swing the bat instead of throwing the ball,” Lovullo said. “We’ll get him in there (at second base) as soon as possible.”

Lovullo said Marte first mentioned the discomfort on the final day in Milwaukee earlier this week. Ildemaro Vargas is getting the start at second base; Lovullo said he opted for the switch-hitting Vargas over infielder Jordan Lawlar because of how tough Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow can be against right-handed hitters.

Meanwhile, right-hander Ryan Thompson’s return from the injured list appears to be nearing. He made his second appearance with Triple-A Reno on Aug. 29 on a minor league rehab assignment, turning in a perfect ninth inning on 10 pitches.

“Everything seemed to be OK,” Lovullo said. “The velo was about what we would expect. We’ll make that decision moving forward as to what to do with him.”

Lovullo said one possibility could be for Thompson to return on Monday, Sept. 1, when rosters expand.

Thompson, one of the club’s better relievers the past few seasons, has not pitched since July 4 due to a scapular strain in his upper back/shoulder.

Diamondbacks LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (5-8, 5.67) vs. Dodgers RHP Tyler Glasnow (1-2, 3.36).

At Dodger Stadium: Rodriguez is coming off another miserable start, an outing in which he gave up five runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Brewers earlier this week in Milwaukee. … He had worked into the seventh inning in back-to-back outings before that, but again could not keep the positive momentum going. … Rodriguez has a history with the Dodgers, who tried to acquire him at the trade deadline in 2023 only to have Rodriguez invoke his no-trade clause. The Dodgers also reportedly wanted to give him a contract extension. … The Dodgers destroyed him in an outing earlier this season, scoring eight times off him (six earned) in 2 2/3 innings. … Glasnow has dealt with his usual rash of health issues this season, but as usual, has been effective when he takes the ball. This will be his 14th start of the season. He has struck out 75 in 61 2/3 innings. … He has faced the Diamondbacks once in the past seven seasons, giving up three runs in five innings in a start last season.
