The Missouri Senate adjourned Wednesday without taking action on a stadium funding bill aimed at keeping the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals in Missouri, setting the stage for a potential special session later this year. After the Missouri House passed the stadium funding bill earlier this week, the legislation has stalled in the Senate. Some senators voiced frustration over the state of negotiations, with some calling the situation in Jefferson City “complete disarray.”“I’m a little disappointed that a few members of the house wanted to take the process into their own hands, left the majority of their body out and have pretty much left the session in disarray,” said Missouri Sen. Brian Williams, D-St. Louis. The $2 billion stadium funding plan, part of Gov. Mike Kehoe’s “Show-Me Sports Investment Act,” would allow Missouri to contribute up to 50% of stadium construction costs through state-issued bonds. The plan would apply only to projects exceeding $500 million and would include a clawback provision if the teams left the state before the bonds were paid off.“I want to do everything I can to keep our teams on the state line,” said Missouri Senator Kurtis Gregory, who is sponsoring the legislation. “I think we’re at a very big step right now saying hey, this is the package we have. We want to make an effort to keep you on this side of the border.”However, some senators questioned whether the bill should be a top priority.

The plan would apply only to projects exceeding $500 million and would include a clawback provision if the teams left the state before the bonds were paid off.
“I want to do everything I can to keep our teams on the state line,” said Missouri Senator Kurtis Gregory, who is sponsoring the legislation. “I think we’re at a very big step right now saying hey, this is the package we have. We want to make an effort to keep you on this side of the border.”
