BOSTON — Red Sox injured right fielder Wilyer Abreu is scheduled to run Monday.

Abreu has been on the injured list with a right calf strain since Aug. 21. Initially, he was confident he would avoid the IL, believing he need only two days of rest before returning.

Manager Alex Cora then said Aug. 25 that Abreu likely would be ready for the Cleveland series (Monday-Wednesday) but he indicated Friday it would take longer.

“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Cora said Sunday before Boston’s series finale with the Pirates. “Slower than what we expected. He’s been able to hit and move around defensively. But he hasn’t been able to run. So are we concerned? Yes and no. He’ll be back at one point. But I think it’s been longer than expected.”

Abreu and head athletic trainer Brandon Henry decided he should take a few days off without running to see if that might help.

“To see if Monday’s better,” Cora said.

Abreu is batting .253 with a .325 on-base percentage, .486 slugging percentage, .811 OPS, 22 homers, 16 doubles and 69 RBIs in 108 games (395 plate appearances). He leads the team in home runs and ranks fifth in fWAR (2.7).

The 2024 Gold Glove winner has 13 defensive runs saved in 804 ⅓ innings.
