The St. Louis Cardinals were up against the Cincinnati Reds when the most unfortunate play happened. MLB fans witnessed a rare double play that ended the inning, retiring hitters with the bases loaded. Earlier last week, Josh Naylor experienced a rare play at the plate. However, this incident left MLB fans with the wildest reactions.

At the top of the first inning, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Andrew Abbott had the bases loaded after surrendering a single, double, and a walk. The fourth hitter, Jordan Walker, stepped up to the plate to make a sacrifice fly. However, the infield ball rule came into play, and Walker was out.

Meanwhile, there was plenty of confusion as the ball went back and forth to Cardinals players. Catcher Jose Trevino recorded an out at the plate and stranded Ivan Herrera, forcing a double play.

Here’s a look at the video:

It was chaos at the Great American Ball Park, but the Reds were unable to hold on as the Cardinals eventually won the game with a 4-2 final score.

MLB fans immediately took to social media to react to the team’s infield blunder.  While some fans found it entertaining, some called out the team for their embarrassing play. Here are some reactions from X.

“This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen,” one fan wrote.

“Absolutely pathetic. Neither team knew the rule. MLB players are sad,” one fan responded.

“How do Major Leaguers not know these rules?” one fan asked.

“WTF are the base coaches doing?” another fan asked.

“This looks like it wasn’t clearly called. The defense didn’t know what was going on either,” one fan chipped in.

“Embarrassing on both teams,” one fan replied.

Cardinals fans were unhappy with the play, but they eventually won the game. St. Louis is stuck at fourth place in the NL Central with a 68-69 record, and it is far behind the playoff race. To make things worse, Nolan Arenado was placed on the IL and has yet to return.
