The red-hot New York Yankees wrap up a four-game series this afternoon against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field.
The Yankees are playing their best baseball of the season, riding a seven-game winning streak. Their offense has been explosive, scoring 10 runs or more in four of their last six games.
But the pitching has been just as critical, with New York limiting opponents to three runs or fewer in five games during this stretch. It’s been all-around excellence on both ends, with one exception: you guessed it, the Yankee bullpen.
Last night, the Yankees’ bullpen nearly spoiled another stellar outing from rookie Cam Schlittler, who allowed just one run on four hits over six innings. Devin Williams blew the save, as he has so many times this season. But the Yankee bats rescued the night, scoring three runs in the top of the 11th to secure the win.
Luis Gil gets the start for the Yankees. After a rocky first start back from the injured list, he has settled in, allowing two runs or fewer in each of his last four outings while posting a 2.18 ERA. That run includes strong performances against playoff-caliber lineups like the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox. Like Schlittler, Gil looks postseason-ready.
The Yankees enter the day just two games back of the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays. To keep up the pressure, their bats will need to solve MartÃn Pérez, who starts for the White Sox.
Since returning from the injured list this month, Pérez has been dominant, throwing 12.1 scoreless innings across two starts, striking out 10 and walking none while allowing just four hits.
Prediction
A pitchers’ duel is likely, and this one could come down to the bullpens. That remains the Yankees’ biggest gamble, but their offense has been relentless enough to cover the cracks.
Prediction: Yankees 4, White Sox 3
