The Chicago Cubs look to sweep their three-game series against the Colorado Rockies this afternoon at Coors Field.
After being swept earlier this week by the San Francisco Giants, the Cubs are aiming to dish out the same punishment to the Rockies. Chicago got a solid start from Javier Assad yesterday, who allowed three runs over six innings. The bullpen locked it down, keeping Colorado scoreless to secure a 4–3 victory — a far more subdued affair than Friday’s 11–7 slugfest.
The Cubs will turn to left-hander Matthew Boyd, who hasn’t been the same pitcher since making his first All-Star game appearance this summer.
Boyd has posted a 2–4 record and a 4.10 ERA since the All-Star break, compared to a sharp 2.34 ERA beforehand. He’s coming off a rough outing against the Giants, where he surrendered five runs on two homers and six hits across 5.1 innings, while also walking three.
Walks and home runs have become an issue for him since midseason. Still, in his lone start against Colorado this year, Boyd was sharp, tossing six scoreless innings.
Tanner Gordon takes the mound for Colorado. He’s trying to rebound from a brutal start to August.
In his first two outings this month, Boyd gave up 17 runs and 23 hits in just 7.1 innings — astronomical figures. But since then, he has bounced back nicely, allowing just one run across six innings in each of his last two starts — against the powerful Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros lineups.
Gordon faced the Cubs once earlier this year, yielding two runs in 4.2 innings. For the Rockies — the worst team in the majors — the hope is that his recent form holds.
Prediction
The Colorado lineup can pull off surprises, but the Cubs have the edge thanks to Boyd’s ability to control the Rockies’ light-hitting offense. Expect Chicago to complete the sweep behind timely hitting and Boyd’s bounce-back outing.
Prediction: Cubs 4, Rockies 2
