The Seattle Mariners’ struggles away from home continued this weekend, as they dropped two of three to the Cleveland Guardians for their fifth straight series loss on the road.

How players Mariners traded have fared since deadline

But fortunately for the M’s, it didn’t hurt them too much in the playoff race. Here’s a look at where things stand.

AL West race

The Mariners didn’t lose any ground in the American League West race, as the first-place Houston Astros lost two of three to the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend. That means Seattle (73-64) is still two games behind Houston (75-62), which wraps up its four-game series against the Angels on Monday.

However, the third-place Texas Rangers (70-67) have surged back into contention with seven wins in their past eight games. Texas is now five games behind Houston and three behind Seattle.

AL wild card race

The Mariners still hold the AL’s third and final wild card spot. They sit three games behind the New York Yankees (76-61) and 2.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox (76-62), who continue to hold the top two wild card spots.

The Mariners have a three-game lead for the final wild card spot over both the Kansas City Royals (70-67) and Texas Rangers (70-67) and a four-game lead over Cleveland (68-67).

Playoff odds

According to FanGraphs, the Mariners have a 41.1% chance of winning the AL West, while the Astros remain the favorite at 57%. Seattle has an 88.3% chance of making the playoffs.

Up next

The Mariners continue their nine-game road trip with a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays (67-69) beginning on Monday. After that, they have an off day Thursday before closing their trip with a three-game set against the Atlanta Braves (61-75) beginning on Friday.
