All four District 51 golf teams were in action Thursday in the GJ Invite at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
Tigers senior Hunter Simmons was the top individual finisher in the tournament, wining it with a 1-over-par 73. Fruita Monument senior Collin Black was the runner-up, shooting a 4-over 76, followed by a myriad of District 51 golfers tied for third. Grand Junction juniors Bryce Campbell and Landon McPhail and sophomore Will Simpson, Palisade senior Jackson Martin, and Central senior Parker Shahan all shot 6-over 78, for a six-way tie for the tournament’s final podium spot.
Grand Junction won the event’s team competition after shooting 235, thanks in part to their podium finishers. Fruita Monument finished second, only two shots back of the Tigers.
VOLLEYBALL
Fruita Monument began its season with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-21 victory at Lakewood. The Wildcats started slowly in each of the first two sets before coming back to win and then pulled away in a back-and-forth third set.
Cambelle Brammer had a solid all-around game to start her senior season — 10 kills, 17 digs and five aces. Kayla Leane added nine kill, 11 digs and three aces, Mackenna Schena also had 11 digs and Parker Clarke had 33 assists and 14 digs.
BOYS SOCCER
After going winless last season, Fruita Monument got off to an encouraging start this season, tying Eagle Valley 2-2 at Canyon View Park.
Wilson Siegmund scored both goals for the Wildcats, heading the ball in off a corner kick by Jason Thorndil and then tying the game with a penalty kick.
SOFTBALL
Central lost to Montrose 10-2 at Columbine Park.
The Red Hawks scored twice in the top of the first inning to gain an early advantage, and tacked on a third run in the top of the second to build what an insurmountable lead.
The Warriors pulled within one run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-out, two-run single by freshman right fielder Baylee DeWitt. But a quick response by the Red Hawks’ bats in the next half-inning extended Montrose’ lead back to three, and a five-run outpouring by the Red Hawks in the seventh buried the Warriors.
Central (0-5) will continue its quest for a first win Friday at Palisade at 3 p.m.
