BOSTON — Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu was scheduled to run Monday but he didn’t do it because his right calf strain still has not improved.
“He’s not running today, either,” manager Alex Cora said before Boston’s game against the Guardians on Tuesday. “Just progressing but slowly. Not the way we envisioned when the injury happened. So we just have to be patient. It’s not a setback. It’s just like it’s not getting better.”

Abreu has been on the injured list since Aug. 21. Initially, he was confident he would avoid the IL, believing he needed only two days of rest before returning. Cora also said Aug. 25 that Abreu might return this week. But his timetable continues to get pushed back.
Abreu is batting .253 with a .325 on-base percentage, .486 slugging percentage, .811 OPS, 22 homers, 16 doubles and 69 RBIs in 108 games (395 plate appearances). He leads the team in home runs and ranks fifth in fWAR (2.7).
The 2024 Gold Glove winner has 13 defensive runs saved in 804 ⅓ innings.
