The Diamondbacks placed left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with a torn ACL in his right knee, an injury that will not only bring an early end to his season but is likely to cost him a large chunk of 2026, as well.

Gurriel is seeking multiple opinions before likely undergoing surgery, Lovullo said, adding that there was a “little bit of fluidity” to the recovery timeline based on the severity of the injury.

“I’m hoping that it’s shorter than longer,” Lovullo said. “Lourdes feels like it might be eight months. That might be the case.”

It is also possible that the recovery takes him closer to this time next season.

Lovullo called it “very tough” for a Diamondbacks team that has suffered a handful of injuries that not only have cost players all of this season but also parts of next year, as well, including starter Corbin Burnes and relievers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez.

Gurriel suffered the injury in the top of the sixth inning on Monday night, Sept. 1, when he tried to veer out of the way of a diving Blaze Alexander and inadvertently twisted his knee. He was in immediate pain and needed to be carted off the field.

Gurriel is signed to a three-year, $42 million contract he landed in December 2023. The contract gives him the ability to opt out after this season. Whether he would have walked away from next year’s $13 million salary if he were healthy seems questionable, but the injury essentially assures that he will not be opting out.

The contract also includes a $14 million club option for 2027 that can be bought out for $5 million.

Lovullo named Jake McCarthy and Jorge Barrosa as players likely to see more playing time in Gurriel’s absence. He also said the versatile Alexander, who is set to start in center field for the second consecutive game, could also see time in left field, which would mean more starts for top prospect Jordan Lawlar at third base.

The Diamondbacks replaced Gurriel on the roster by recalling infielder Connor Kaiser from Triple-A Reno. That move was made in conjunction with another series of moves, in which the Diamondbacks optioned right-hander Juan Burgos and recalled right-hander Taylor Rashi.

Rangers at Diamondbacks, 6:40 p.m., Cox, Ch. 34

Diamondbacks RHP Nabil Crismatt (0-2, 1.84) vs. Rangers TBA.

At Chase Field: Crismatt has made three starts since joining the Diamondbacks midway through last month, pitching well in each of them. Most recently, he gave up two runs (one earned) in 5 2/3 innings against the Brewers in Milwaukee. … He has leaned heavily on his change-up in those three starts, using it more than any other pitch. It has induced an impressive 41.5 percent whiff rate while holding opposing hitters to just a .222 average. … The Rangers have yet to name a starter, but this could be a bullpen day. If that ends up happening, one option could be LHP Jacob Latz, who has mostly pitched in relief but has picked up the occasional spot start. He has a 3.13 ERA in 63 1/3 innings this season.
