The Colorado Rockies don’t exactly have much going for them. They just lost their 100th game for the third straight year, their starting pitcher is getting mad at opponents for taking advantage of his poor pitches and the club has no sense of identity.
While the light at the end of the tunnel is flickering and is so dim that almost nobody can see it, the man holding the light is Ethan Holliday, who the organization selected with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft back in July. The son of former Rockie Matt Holliday, Ethan, is a 6-foot-4 infielder who has the tools to lead a rebuild for any organization, even the lowly Rockies.
On Tuesday, Holliday gave Rockies fans a glimpse of what he’s bringing to the table as he demolished a baseball deep over the right field fence for his first professional home run. There was no doubt that he had sent one out the park for the first time as a pro.

You’ve gotta feel bad for that baseball.
Holliday, the No. 17 overall prospect in the MLB’s rankings (No. 1 in the Rockies farm system), has now played 14 games with the Fresno Grizzlies, the single-A affiliate for the Rockies. He’s slashed .232/.338/.321 with 13 hits (three extra-base) and eight runs. However, his strikeout rate currently sits at 39%, but that’s a stat that he will have plenty of time to improve on.
The Grizzlies only have eight games left on the schedule for this season. As it stands, Holliday’s projected major league debut is in 2029, so Rockies fans shouldn’t be expecting to see their top prospect on Blake Street anytime soon.
