As the Los Angeles Dodgers have battled stretches of inconsistency all season long, there seems to be a belief that there is more to what the on-field product has shown.

Injuries have played a key part in this belief, but fans, players, and pundits alike seem to believe that there is more than meets the eye in LA. Manager Dave Roberts knows this as well as anyone, but recently selected right fielder Teoscar Hernández as a specific example as someone who he knows the team can get more production out of.

“Teo is a guy that we counted on a lot last year in the biggest of moments,” Roberts said. “He’s a guy that I really admire, because he can balance the fun part of baseball but also have that edge. And I think we’ve lost a little bit of that edge over the last couple months. So I think, for me, I want to see that edge, that fight, that fire, and I’ll bet on any result. And so that’s for me, it’s like, I just want to see that. We’re past the mechanics part of it, and let’s just get into the fight. And I’ve seen it, and I believe that’s what’s to come in the next month and beyond.”

Roberts was also asked if he talked to Hernández about getting the “edge” back and provided a coy response.

“Maybe,” he said. “We’ve had numerous conversations. So we’re in a good spot. We’re aligned. He knows his value for our ballclub. He knows my expectations of him individually. So we’re in lockstep.”

Hernández is having a down year, hitting .247 with a .734 OPS, but has been batting just .171 in his last 10 games. The Dodgers have gone 4-6 in this stretch, and with 24 games to go until October, no time is better than now to up his production.
