News:

The Mariners claimed LHP Jose Castillo off waivers from the Mets and DFA’d Joe Jacques. Castillo will not be eligible to pitch in the post-season should the Mariners make it but can be used for the stretch run.

RHP Sauryn Lao, recently DFA’d by Seattle, was picked up by the Nationals and optioned to Triple-A Rochester.

The Mariners also announced reliever Jackson Kowar, currently in Tacoma, is going on the 15-day IL with right shoulder impingement. The move is retroactive to August 19.

1981 – The Red Sox and the Mariners play 19 innings to a 7 – 7 tie. The game ends with the Mariners winning, 8 – 7, in 20 innings when the suspended game is resumed the next day, making it the longest game played in Fenway Park history.

1995 – Rich Amaral, a last minute substitute for Griffey (sore wrist), hits a three-run HR to key a 9-6 comeback win at Baltimore.

2000 – Paul Abbott pitches 7.1 innings of no-hit ball until Rico Brogna breaks up the no-no.  Abbott combines with Jose Paniagua for a one-hitter against Boston.
