The injury occurred on Monday night in the top of the sixth inning on a non-contact injury, when Rangers’ Rowdy Tellez hit a fly ball into left-center field. Blaze Alexander made a diving catch, although Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had to shift out of the way in the last second. Immediately, Gurriel Jr. went down in pain and grabbed his right knee. Unfortunately, after his diagnosis of a torn right ACL, Gurriel Jr. will now miss the rest of the 2025 season and the beginning of the 2026 MLB season as well.

Blaze Alexander spoke on the incident with Lourdes Gurriel Jr.:
“I made the play, I was kind of looking at the crowd, and started running in. I see [shortstop Geraldo] Perdomo running towards me. I was like, what’s going on? Looked back and Gurriel was down.” (Credit: Steve Gilbert | MLB)

What does this mean for the Arizona Diamondbacks moving forward? Jorge Barrosa, Jake McCarthy, and Blaze Alexander will most likely be the three candidates to take over left field while Gurriel Jr. is rehabbing his injury. It’s another big blow to the Arizona Diamondbacks, as Gurriel Jr. has been one of the most consistent hitters as of late. In his last 30 games, Gurriel Jr. has 29 hits, 32 RBIs, 7 homeruns, and had a .482 slugging percentage. The D-Backs will surely miss his consistency at the plate, although this now gives a golden opportunity for three young players to make a name for themselves as the D-Backs keep fighting for a postseason push.
