Caleb Bonemer made a bit of history when the Okemos star was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft, as the highest-drafted player to come out of the Greater Lansing area.
The shortstop continues to show everyone why.
The 19-year-old Bonemer on Wednesday earned a spot on MLB Pipeline’s All-Breakout Prospect Team for 2025, continuing a season in which he’s emerged as a top-100 prospect according to both Pipeline and Baseball America.
“The White Sox invested a well-over-slot $2,997,500 bonus in Bonemer as a 2024 second-rounder, so his .283/.403/.480 line with 12 homers in 101 games at two Class A stops isn’t totally unexpected,” Pipeline’s Jim Callis writes of Bonemer, who was selected at No. 43 overall. “But his defense at shortstop has been surprisingly good and he may be able to stay there.”
Bonemer was promoted last week to high Single-A Winston-Salem, after hitting .281 with 10 home runs and 58 RBIs in 96 games at low-A Kannapolis in his organizational debut. He compiled an .858 OPS. He’s off to a strong start with the Dash, hitting .286 with a pair of home runs among five extra-base hits in 21 at-bats, good for a hefty 1.162 OPS.
Bonemer entered the season outside Pipeline’s top 10 list for White Sox prospects but, like the rest of the prospects on the all-breakout team, has “soared since.” He was identified in June as one of Baseball America’s “biggest early risers” for the 2025 season.
Bonemer was a two-time Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year at Okemos.
