When Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Cam Devanney recorded his first Major League hit, it was supposed to be a moment to cherish. But instead of celebrating the milestone in a win over the inconsistent Dodgers, many fans were left fuming, believing Dodgers pitcher Emmet Sheehan intentionally kept the ball instead of giving it to the rookie.
After Devanney’s first hit dropped in for a second-inning single, the umpire handed Sheehan a fresh ball. But viewers noticed Sheehan pulled the hit ball from his glove and returned the new one. The Pirates had asked for that historic ball, and many think Emmet Sheehan knowingly took it.
Watch the video here:
Devanney, acquired from the Royals midseason, had been a stellar Triple-A hitter, slashing .266/.493/.846 with 20 home runs and 66 RBIs before debuting for Pittsburgh last week. The 28-year-old went 0 for 3 with a walk in his first game, followed by going hitless in four at-bats against the Dodgers on Tuesday night.

After the video went viral, social media blew up with criticism. Fans labeled Emmet Sheehan’s action a “sc**bag move,” and some called it one of the worst gestures they have seen. Former World Series champ Eric Hosmer didn’t mince words, calling it an “all‑time scumbag move.”
Check out some reactions:
“Pending more information…. Another all-time scumbag move,” Eric Hosmer wrote.
“Wow , what a scumbag move,” one fan replied.
“Next year he’ll be seen in the stands taking a home run ball from a child,” another X user commented.
“You expect anything less from that classless organization,” one fan wrote.
“What the hell is wrong with this guy?” another angry fan reacted.
“Clearly switched them and I don’t believe for a second him saying it was a mistake. 100% intentional bush league crap,” one X user replied.
“Why would he do something like that?” another disappointed fan wrote.
“What a putz! Low move! No class man!” one X user commented.
Despite the online backlash, Emmet Sheehan insisted it was unintentional. “I liked the ball I was throwing with, so I tried to keep it,” he said. “And I had no idea that was his first hit. … I’m going to try and find Cam tomorrow and apologize.”
Devanney, meanwhile, said he believes he ultimately got the right ball. “I’m not entirely sure what happened, I actually found out just moments ago but I think I did get the right one,” he said.
In the end, Devanney had the last laugh as the Pirates secured a 3-0 win. Both teams will play the series finale on Thursday. The Dodgers have been struggling of late, and many are siding with the Padres to win the NL West.
