Dodgers minor league outfielder Kendall George is putting an amazing finishing kick on his 2025 season for High-A Great Lakes. He stole three more bases on Thursday on the road against the Lake County Captains, giving him an eye-popping 100 steals on the season.
George on Thursday singled in the first inning and stole second and third off starter Michael Kennedy, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher on the steal of third. In the fifth inning, George singled and stole second base against reliever Sean Matson.
It’s only the fourth 100-steal season in Dodgers organizational history. George joins Maury Wills, who set an MLB record in 1962 with 104 stolen bases while winning National League MVP with the Dodgers. Alan Wiggins holds the organizational record of 120 steals with Class-A Lodi in 1980. Maynard DeWitt stole 110 bases for Class-D Zanesville in 1946.
In the last two decades of minor league baseball, George is only the fourth player to steal 100 bases in a season. Billy Hamilton set a record with 155 steals between High-A and Double-A in 2012, one year after he swiped 103 for Dayton, which was then Class-A. Those 103 steals for Hamilton are the Midwest League single-season record, and George has three more games left this weekend to break it.
The other recent 100-steal minor leaguers were Delino DeShields Jr. stealing 101 bases between Class-A Lexington and High-A Lancaster in 2012, and Chandler Simpson with 104 steals between Double-A Montgomery and High-A Bowling Green last season before making his major league debut with the Rays this season.
“I’ve learned you can’t really run reckless,” George said. “There is technique that goes into it. Even though I am really fast and can get away with some things. This year I’ve been really honing in on that technique, picking spots better, picking counts better and things of that nature. Even though it has improved, I think there is still room for improvement. I’ve been thrown out 20-something times. I could already be at 100. But the strides that I have made this year are kind of positive.”
George has 72 steals in his last 53 games, dating back to June 28. During that stretch he has more multi-steal games (20) than games with no steals (16). That’s how he got to triple digits in stolen bases this season.
