CINCINNATI (WKRC) – In a season full of frustrating moments and crippling defeats, the Cincinnati Reds hit a new low in a 13-9 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.
Cincinnati jumped on top of Toronto starter Shane Bieber with five runs in the second inning; Jose Trevino had a two-run single, Matt McLain an RBI single, and Noelvi Marte added a two-run double. But by the fifth inning that lead was gone. The Blue Jays scored a run in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth, another in the sixth and seventh innings, four more in the eighth and another in the ninth. They tied a season-high with five home runs.
Per OptaStats, the Reds are the only MLB team in the modern era to have a 5+ run lead at home but then allow a run in 7+ consecutive innings and lose the game.
According to FanDuel Sports Network Cincinnati, it was just the fourth time in franchise history — and the first time in 55 years — that the Reds have lost consecutive games in which they scored nine or more runs (1970 and twice in 1894).
Cincinnati dropped to 70-70 on the season.
