Detroit Tigers’ Scott Harris doesn’t believe in Tarik Skubal window

Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris talks July 31, 2025, about how Tarik Skubal’s status impacts front office plans.

The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox, 6-0, on Saturday, Sept. 6.Tarik Skubal didn’t allow a hit for 4 2/3 innings and held the White Sox scoreless for seven.Gleyber Torres hit a three-run homer as part of a five-run fourth inning for the Tigers.

Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal tossed seven scoreless innings.

He allowed just two hits and one walk while racking up six strikeouts.

Yes, the reigning American League Cy Young winner delivered another dominant performance, but don’t forget about second baseman Gleyber Torres, who drove the Tigers to their 6-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, Sept. 6, in the second of three games in the series at Comerica Park.

Torres hit a three-run home run in a five-run fourth inning.

The Tigers (82-61) have evened the series against the White Sox (54-89). The finale is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7, at 1:40 p.m. (FanDuel Sports Network Detroit), with right-hander Charlie Morton starting for the Tigers.

In the fourth inning, Torres pulled a middle-middle changeup from left-hander Martín Pérez for a three-run home run to left-center field, extending the Tigers’ lead to 6-0.

The Tigers had plenty of quality plate appearances against Pérez.

The team approach paid off in the fourth inning, capped by Torres’ three-run home run.

The inning started with Riley Greene’s single and Andy Ibáñez’s walk. Both runners came around to score: Greene on Zach McKinstry’s double for a 2-0 lead and Ibáñez on Javier Báez’s sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.

Pérez allowed six runs on five hits and three walks with zero strikeouts across four innings, throwing 89 pitches. He entered Saturday’s game with a 2.16 ERA, but the Tigers forced his ERA up to 3.15 after his ninth game (and eighth start).

As for the big swing, it was Torres’ 15th home run in 127 games, including his first homer since Aug. 25 and his first homer at Comerica Park since July 29. The 28-year-old is hitting .224 with a .669 OPS in 43 games since the All-Star break.

Tarik Skubal lowers ERA to 2.10

Skubal continues to dominate.

This time, the 28-year-old fired seven scoreless innings in 90 pitches. After his excellence, right-handed relievers Tommy Kahnle and Rafael Montero shut down the White Sox in the eighth and ninth.

Skubal leads the AL with a 2.10 ERA in 28 starts.

Facing the White Sox, Skubal didn’t surrender a hit until there were two outs in the fifth inning.

That’s when Bryan Ramos tapped an outside changeup for a bloop double that landed in front of left fielder Riley Greene. But Skubal bounced back by striking out Michael A. Taylor with a changeup to end the fifth inning.

The White Sox had their first baserunner in the first inning, as Chase Meidroth drew a leadoff walk on six pitches, only for Skubal to erase him from the bases with a double play. In the sixth inning, Meidroth collected the second and final hit against Skubal, slapping a two-out single.

Skubal generated 10 whiffs on 48 swings for a 20.8% whiff rate: three fastballs, five changeups, two sinkers. The White Sox averaged a weak 81.9 mph exit velocity on 16 balls in play.

Leadoff hitter Jahmai Jones

The Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Jahmai Jones hit a leadoff home run off Pérez, driving a second-pitch cutter over the left-field fence.

The 28-year-old produced his second leadoff homer in his past four games. (The other came Monday, Sept. 1, against the New York Mets at Comerica Park.)

Jones has a .929 OPS in 58 games.
