PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder Blaze Alexander climbed the wall to rob Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman of a home run, and Brandon Pfaadt delivered six quality innings in a series-clinching 5-1 win on Saturday.

The D-backs won a third straight series, moving above .500 for the first time since July 1 at 72-71. Additionally, they improved to 4.5 games back of the postseason picture with 19 games remaining.

The Diamondbacks led 5-1 in the eighth inning, the same frame Boston scored four runs on Friday. Bregman clubbed a fly ball deep to left field, and Alexander — who had not played outfield in a major league game before this past week — brought it back.

Alexander was turned around on his route, but he tracked the ball and timed his leap perfectly. He snatched the ball before a Red Sox fan could take it away, landing and throwing his hands up in the air.

WHAT IS GOING ON TONIGHT?! 😮

“The ball went up and just thought in my head, ‘Go get it, go get it,’” Alexander said. “I knew it was gonna be at the wall or close. I made that little spin around, got to my athletic jumping side, made the jump and felt it stick right away. Also felt the Red Sox fan, me and him were battling a little bit for that ball, but we ripped it.”

Pitcher Jalen Beeks tipped his cap.

“ Gonna be (SportsCenter) Top 10 for a while,” Beeks said. “From my perspective, very thankful.”

Alexander said he had played one inning of left field before, not only in the major leagues, but ever. He has just started to get his feet wet in center field.

“ I was always on the dirt,” Alexander said.

Alexander made highlight reels in Friday’s 10-5 win, as well, with an outfield assist on a frozen rope to home plate.

Saturday’s play stood out even further considering Boston center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela robbed Corbin Carroll of a home run in the fifth inning. An eye for an eye.

It’s not every day you see dueling home run robberies 🤯

Which one was better? 😳

The Diamondbacks’ bullpen ended up throwing three scoreless innings to wrap up the win with Jake Woodford, Beeks and John Curtiss.

Brandon Pfaadt bounces back

Pfaadt allowed one run over six innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.

He lowered his season ERA to 3.50 when pitching at Chase Field, and the Diamondbacks are 10-5 in such games. His road ERA is a brutal 7.13, as he allowed 10 earned runs in seven innings over his previous two starts away from Phoenix.

Take away his eight-run, no-out start at home against the Washington Nationals in May, and his home ERA falls to 2.62.

“ I think it’s all correlated, I’m comfortable here,” Pfaadt said. “ On the road, it’s a different story. We gotta fix that soon, with this next road trip.”

On Saturday, Pfaadt drew whiffs on all six of the pitches he delivered, leaning primarily on the sinker, curveball and changeup this time.

Pfaadt was able to keep the ball on the ground, including six ground outs to shortstop Geraldo Perdomo. Three of his six frames went 1-2-3.

Offensively, the Diamondbacks scored two runs on an error from Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story in the second inning and played downhill baseball from there. Perdomo delivered a sacrifice fly for his 91st RBI of the season, which is tied for 14th in MLB.

Catcher James McCann, in his first game since Aug. 27 (back), delivered three hits off former teammate and Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito.

Diamondbacks make up ground

Saturday was a terrific day for the Diamondbacks in the standings.

The New York Mets lost in Cincinnati and the San Francisco Giants were walked off in St. Louis.

Arizona is now 4.5 games back of New York for the third National League Wild Card spot with 19 games to play. The Giants are a half-game ahead of the D-backs with six games left between the NL West foes.

The D-backs are also a half-game ahead of the Reds.

“ I think it has been real for us the whole time,” Beeks said. “We beat a lot of good teams. We just needed to get on a roll. I think I said that a couple weeks ago, we just gotta to get hot and see what happens. We haven’t had that streak this year. I’m hopeful and I think it’s about to happen.”

Up next for Diamondbacks

The series and the homestand wrap up on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. MST.

Ryne Nelson (3.57 ERA) will match up with Boston right-hander Brayan Bello (3.07 ERA).
