Ahead of Friday night’s home opening football game between the Clinton River Kings and Davenport Central Blue Devils, Clinton High School officially inducted one individual and one team to its Athletic Hall of Fame.

Sean Johnson was the lone individual to be inducted as part of the 2025 Hall of Fame class. He was a 2000 graduate of CHS and a standout athlete in both baseball and track.

In track and field as a hurdler he won eight MAC Championships in his four years. As a junior, he was the State Runner-Up in the 110 meter hurdles. But as a senior he became the State Champion and Drake Relays Champion in the 110 meter hurdles. He later earned All-State honors.

Out on the baseball diamond, he was a four-year started who pitched and played shortstop. As a junior, he earned 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-District selections. He went on to be drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 41st round of the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft, but he chose to go to college instead. He played baseball at Iowa State University and St. Ambrose University.

Joining him in the 2025 class was the 1975 River King Football Team. This was the first State playoff team in CHS history, which also got the school’s first playoff win.

The team went 8-3, defeating Bettendorf to become the undisputed Mississippi Valley Conference Champions. That was their first conference championship in 28 years at that point. They also had upset victories over Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Washington in the regular season.

They kept their underdog season going in the first round of the playoffs, beating No. 1 ranked Burlington 31-30 in triple overtime. They were eliminated in the state semifinals by Waterloo West.

Earning 1st Team MVC honors were Bill Dunmore, Gregg Lind, Mark Redman, David Holsclaw and Dan Quick.

Chuck Marcucci, Ken Nelson Jeff Bobek, Jeff Voss, Bob Cagley, Brent Kokemuller, Tom Lockhart, Dave Brunson, Dan Parker, Butch Umble and Tony Williams were MVC Honorable Mentions.
