ARLINGTON — How tight are the margins around this Texas Rangers roster right now? Even the need for a just-in-case innings eater required a deep dive.

The Rangers designated right-hander Caleb Boushley for assignment before Sunday’s game vs. the Houston Astros at Globe Life Field and selected the contract of right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. from Triple-A Round Rock.

Boushley, who had a 6.02 ERA in 28 games this season, threw 39 pitches in Saturday’s 11-0 loss vs. the Astros. He is out of minor league options, hence the designation for assignment, and must now pass through waivers before he can be outrighted to the minor leagues or released.

The transaction created a spot for Edwards on the organization’s 40-man roster. The only other available pitchers on the 40-man roster were right-handers Marc Church (on a rehab assignment at High-A Hub City), Jose Corniell (pitched Saturday at Triple-A Round Rock), Kumar Rocker (who has not thrown in a game since Aug. 7), Winston Santos (who has only pitched in two games at Double-A Frisco since a back injury cost him most of this season) and Emiliano Teodo.

Edwards, whom the Rangers signed to a minor league contract on July 22, represented an “experienced guy” that was fresh and prepared to pitch Sunday if the Rangers needed coverage according to Bochy. He last pitched five innings for Round Rock on Sep. 2 and has a 5.31 ERA in 39 1/3 innings with the affiliate since he signed.

The Rangers drafted Edwards in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB draft and later traded him as part of a package to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-hander Matt Garza. He has a 3.59 ERA in 298 big league games and won a World Series with the Cubs in 2016.
