The Angels, who have been dealing with injuries all season, were dealt another scare on Sunday afternoon when catcher Logan O’Hoppe was forced to leave the game against the Athletics after being struck in the head by a backswing.
The incident occurred in the top of the seventh inning when Oakland shortstop Jacob Wilson’s warm-up swing made contact with O’Hoppe. Trainers quickly came out, and he walked off after a brief inspection, which left both teams shaken.
Travis d’Arnaud stepped in for Logan O’Hoppe and made an impression, delivering the go-ahead RBI double that lifted the Angels to a 4-3 win over the Athletics.
After the game, interim manager Ray Montgomery confirmed that doctors are evaluating O’Hoppe for a possible concussion and have listed him as day-to-day.

For the Angels, the timing couldn’t be worse. Logan O’Hoppe has been trying to find consistency at the plate after a tough stretch earlier in the year. He went 0-for-2 with a walk on Sunday before leaving the game and had a rough June, batting .155 with a 35 percent strikeout rate. Overall, the 25-year-old is hitting .217 with 19 home runs and 43 RBIs in 109 games.
With the Angels hanging on in the Wild Card race, losing their starting catcher would be a big setback. D’Arnaud will step in to fill in for O’Hoppe. Apart from Logan O’Hoppe, Gustavo Campero was also out with an injury, putting the Angels in a tough spot.
For now, the Los Angeles team will shift its focus to the series against the Minnesota Twins. Making the playoffs seems to be a hard shot for the team, which is struggling to make ends meet. For now, they are eight games behind the Wild Card spot and must win every game that comes their way.
