The amazing Chicago White Sox have won six games in a row!!! Yeah, yeah, four were against the hapless Twins (who will take our customary spot at the bottom of the AL Central next year — you heard it here first), but the other two were against real teams — real, actually good teams — besides which, they all count, right?
Getting to seven will be more of a challenge than the first six because the Sox have mostly escaped facing aces in this stretch. But such avoidance is over, with the very best there is taking the mound for the Tigers: reigning AL Cy Young holder and very probable repeater Tarik Skubal, he of the 2.18 ERA and 216 strikeouts in 173 innings.
Skubal had begun to show some signs of being almost human in August, but last time out he blanked the Royals for seven innings, so maybe he got tired of mere mortality. The White Sox haven’t faced the lefty this season (Detroit looked past wins vs. the Sox, silly perhaps given a series split, and saved Skubal for the Cubs), but did manage to score on him in one of two games last year, so there is hope.
Adding to that hope is the fact the Sox counter with their ace, the well-rested (thanks to missing most of the season on the IL) MartÃn Pérez, who sports an even better 2.16 ERA (albeit over only 41 2/3 innings), and held the Yankees to two runs over six innings last time out to start the winning streak.
Skubal will be facing a Sox lineup that has scored 43 runs during the streak. There will be seven batters hitting from the right side, but Will Venable inexplicably has Dominic Fletcher in right. Perhaps that’s a reward for going 2-for-4 last night in his first game of the season last night, or perhaps Mike Tauchman is still feeling soreness, or maybe there’s a complete shortage of right-handed hitting outfielders with Luis Robert Jr., on the IL. But Fletcher hits .165 in his career against lefties, so don’t expect an encore.
Pérez takes on a Tigers lineup that has a .787 OPS against southpaws and just fell from the top spot in the AL with last night’s loss. Detroit is now a game behind Toronto, so it may be a tad upset. But Pérez has been good against them this year, giving up just two earned runs in 9 2/3 innings, the last time in his first appearance after coming off the IL on August 13, when he was limited to 66 pitches.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 p.m. Central, with a game time temp of 65° and moderate wind from right to left. Usual broadcast suspects.
