The Los Angeles Dodgers have optioned right-handed pitcher Ben Casparius and activated left-handed pitcher Alex Vesia off the injured list.

Vesia was expected to be activated ahead of Monday’s game, but is now officially back for the second game of the series. The left-hander has made 59 appearances for LA this season, sporting a 2.75 ERA with 69 strikeouts across 52.1 innings pitched.

As for Casparius, the right-hander has been a savior for the Dodgers this season, working out of just about every scenario. He’s been a starter or opener, a middle reliever and a high-leverage reliever. Across 46 appearances, he has a 4.64 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 77.2 innings pitched.

Vesia went on the injured list in late August with an oblique issue. Fortunately, it was a mild injury, and Vesia is now back with plenty of time to ramp back up for the postseason.

Vesia has been one of the Dodgers’ most trusted relievers since 2021, and enjoyed a career-year last season, accruing a 1.76 ERA across 67 appearances. He’ll likely slide right back into high-leverage innings on a team searching for answers in the bullpen.

Why Was Ben Casparius Optioned?

Casparius was likely sent down to get a break as he’s already throwing a career-high in MLB innings this season after pitching just 8.1 frames last year. There’s still a chance he returns to the big league roster before the season ends, and he could very well factor into the postseason picture.

For now, though, he’ll get a brief respite with LA continuing to get healthier as October nears.
