Sean Burke is back with the Chicago White Sox, while Dan Altavilla is designated for assignment in order to make room.
The Chicago White Sox have recalled right-hander Sean Burke from Triple-A Charlotte and will give him the start in Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, providing the struggling pitcher another opportunity to establish himself in the major league rotation.
Second Chance for Burke
Burke returns to the White Sox after being optioned to Charlotte last month following a disappointing stretch with the big league club. The 24-year-old had posted a 4.28 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 117.2 innings in his previous stint with Chicago, striking out 110 batters while walking 54.
His time in Triple-A was initially rocky, allowing 11 runs over his first 12.2 innings across three starts. However, Burke showed improvement in his most recent outing, striking out seven batters in a quality start that likely earned him this recall.
Rotation Opportunity
With the White Sox in rebuilding mode, Burke should have a strong chance to remain in the rotation for the remainder of the season. The organization is focused on evaluating young talent and giving prospects extended opportunities to prove themselves at the major league level.
Sean Burke’s recall represents another chance for the right-hander to show he can be a viable rotation piece moving forward. His strikeout ability (110 in 117.2 innings) demonstrates the potential that made him an organizational prospect, but consistency has been his biggest challenge.

To make room for Burke’s return, the White Sox designated Dan Altavilla for assignment. Should he clear waivers, he will likely head back to Triple-A Charlotte, just days after his activation from the 15-day injured list on September 5.
Altavilla, who turned 33 on Monday, had made three appearances since returning from injury, posting a 3.86 ERA with four strikeouts over 2.1 innings. Despite the recent struggles, the veteran right-hander owns a solid 2.48 ERA over 29.0 innings this season, making his demotion somewhat surprising.
What’s On Tap Next for the Chicago White Sox
Burke’s start against Tampa Bay on Wednesday will be closely watched as the White Sox determine their rotation plans for the final weeks of the season. With little to play for in terms of wins and losses, Chicago can afford to give Burke an extended look and see how the rest of his season shakes out.
For Burke, this is a crucial opportunity to prove he belongs at the major league level and can be part of the White Sox future plans.
