Earlier in the game, Ketel Marte injured his right foot when he fouled a ball off his foot in the first inning. The D-Backs announced it was a right foot contusion, although x-rays came back negative.
D-Backs Manager Torey Lovullo gives update on Ketel Marte:
“He fouled that ball off his foot. I knew that it got him good. X-rays were negative, so I think we’re in a good spot so far. I could tell by his body language he wasn’t feeling good. It just got to be too much. The way I look at it, he’s one of the best players in the National League, and I want him on the field, but at a certain point, we’ve got to be smart about it.” (Credit: Aled D’Agostino | Diamondbacks on Sports Illustrated)

The D-Backs now have a day off before a weekend series in Minnesota against the Twins. Marte will be able to get a little rest and might even find himself back in Arizona’s lineup on Friday night.

The injury bug has hit the D-Backs hard this season, and they are already dealing with a lot of missing pieces. Pitchers Corbin Burnes and Justin Martinez were lost to Tommy John Surgery, and more recently, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Tyler Locklear have had season-ending injuries. Keeping Ketel Marte healthy will be paramount for the D-Backs if they want to keep competing in the tight NL Wild Card race.
