For the second straight night, the Pittsburgh Pirates came up empty in extra innings and were walked-off 2-1 by the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Wednesday.
With the loss, the Pirates fell to 64-82 on the season, clinching their 29th losing season in the the last 33 years.
How We Got There
Orioles tarter Tyler Wells retired the first 10 batters he faced before Spencer Horwitz hit a one-out home run in the fourth inning to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Horwitz’s homer was one of just two hits for the Pirates on the night.
On on obvious pitch count, Paul Skenes blanked the Orioles (68-77) across five-strong innings, but Jackson Holliday tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single off Isaac Mattson in the top of the eighth.
The Pirates were unable to push a run across in the top of the 10th, Dylan Beavers delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the inning of Kyle Nicolas (1-1).
Key Moment
Automatic runner Oneil Cruz advanced to third base with one out on an Albert Suárez (2-0) wild pitch, but Cam Devanney struck out looking and Ji Hwan Bae bounced out weakly back to the Orioles reliever to end the inning.

Paul Skenes allowed a pair of hits across his five-shutout innings. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight. His 1.94 career ERA is the lowest of any starting pitcher through their first 53 starts in the live-ball era (since 1920).

By striking out Coby Mayo in the third inning, Paul Skenes became the seventh pitcher in Pirates history to record 200 strikeouts in a season. The others are Bob Veale (four times), Oliver Pérez, Mitch Keller, A.J. Burnett, Francisco Liraino and Gerrit Cole.
