One of the biggest Yankees-Red Sox regular season head-to-head meetings takes MLB’s center stage this weekend in an important three-game series in Boston.

The Yankees (81-65) hold a slim, half-game margin lead over the Red Sox (81-66) for second in the American League East and for the top overall wildcard spot in the AL.

The Bronx Bombers have rebounded well the past month after a tough summer with a 21-11 record in their last 32 games. However, the Yankees struggled in a series loss at home to AL-best Detroit Tigers where they were outscored 23-3 during the first two games.

In the series finale, the Yankees were able to bounce back with a milestone two home run performance from captain Aaron Judge in a much needed 9-3 win over the Tigers to avoid the sweep heading into baseball’s biggest rivalry.

Luis Gil makes his eighth start of the season that did not begin until early August due to a high grade lat strain he suffered in May. While command issues have been a problem (19 walks in 29 1/3 innings), the reigning AL Rookie of the Year has done enough to win three of his last five starts. One of those outings was against the Red Sox, where Gil was tabbed with a no-decision on Aug. 21 in the Yankees 6-3 loss to Boston.

After missing all of 2024 with a torn UCL, it’s been a tremendous bounce back campaign for Lucas Giolito, who’s won double digit games for the first time in three years. The 2019 All-Star was opposite Gil in that start on Aug. 21 in the Bronx, where Giolito was also given a no-decision following 4 2/3 innings pitched where he allowed three runs on five hits.
