BOSTON — The regular season has just over two weeks remaining and the Red Sox, like every other team in postseason contention, hope to get healthy.
Toward that end, Alex Cora gave an update on a number of injured players and their status:
1) Wilyer Abreu. “He’s still working out, running, up to 85 percent,” said Cora. “Talking to (members of the training staff), there’s a few more things that he needs to do. Hopefully, we can get him up to 90 percent as far as the effort, and when we get there, he’ll be back with us.”
Abreu has been out since Aug. 18 with a calf strain.
2) Romy Gonzalez. Gonzalez left Tuesday night’s game in Sacramento with a sore knee.
“He’s doing OK,” said Cora, “a little bit banged up. He’ll be available off the bench (tonight) and hopefully, he’ll start tomorrow.”
With Gonzalez sidelined, the Sox had David Hamilton at second and Nathaniel Lowe at first base.
3) Roman Anthony, oblique strain, has not begun any baseball activities.
4) Brennan Bernardino was placed on the IL with a left lat strained and replaced on the active roster by fellow lefty Chris Murphy.
“Playing catch the last day in Sacramento,” said Cora, “he felt something grab him below the shoulder. He had an MRI (Thursday), it was a strain, so we had to put him on the IL. It was right before the game, so he wasn’t available.
5) Richard Fitts (arm neuritis) and Jordan Hicks. (shoulder tendinitis).
“Fitzy is getting his strength back, Hicks the same thing,” said Cora.
Asked about the prospect of getting either pitcher back before the end of the season, Cora said: “Hicks is in play; I don’t know about Fitzy”
There was no update provided on Dustin May, who was placed on the IL earlier in the week with right elbow neuritis.
