The New York Mets continue to spiral out of the playoffs on Saturday as they beat themselves in their 3-2 loss to the Texas Rangers. Despite a strong outing from Brandon Sproat, the Mets lost because the offense couldn’t score with runners in scoring position. As well as small mistakes around the field. The Mets have lost eight consecutive games and are now 31-49 since June 13th and are in complete free fall.

Sproat Strong In Second Start
After Jonah Tong struggled mightily in his start on Friday, Brandon Sproat had to have a good outing, and he gave the Mets a very nice game. Sproat went six shutout innings on only 70 pitches and struck out three. Sproat probably could’ve gone seven innings. He was in control for the entire game and looked impressive in just his second start of his career.
Mets Not Clutch On Offense And On The Field
While Sproat was phenomenal, the Mets’ offense didn’t help him out. The offense went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left twelve runners on base. Starling Marte struck out looking in the bottom of the first inning with the bases loaded. In the bottom of the fifth inning, after Francisco Lindor scored on a bloop hit by Pete Alonso that was assisted by a Texas Rangers error, Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo struck out and left Alonso on second base.
One inning later, with Brett Baty on second and Francisco Alvarez on first and Jeff McNeil at the plate, Baty got thrown out at second. It was a key error by Baty. In the eighth, Brandon Nimmo reached second base with nobody out but did not score. Juan Soto got a single with one out in the ninth after Lindor struck out. Alonso would strike out, and then after Mauricio notched a hit, Nimmo struck out swinging to end the game.
Defensively, Alvarez’s catcher’s interference in the top of the eighth inning set up a two-run inning for the Rangers to tie the game. Then in the ninth, Lindor dropped a line drive from Cody Freeman and wound up scoring to give the Rangers the lead. It also didn’t help that Edwin DÃaz struggled mightily and allowed all three Rangers runs.
Juan Soto Joins 40/30 Club
The lone bright spot for the Mets’ offense, Soto hit his 40th home run of the season. He is the fifth Mets player in history to reach 40 home runs (Mike Piazza, Carlos Beltran, David Wright, Todd Hundley), and the first Met to record 40 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season.
