Milwaukee Brewers fans pay tribute to the late Bob Uecker

The Milwaukee Brewers honored the life of the legendary Bob Uecker on Sunday Aug. 24 at American Family Field.

With a playoff berth now clinched, the Milwaukee Brewers set their sights on a series sweep against the St. Louis Cardinals at American Family Field on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14.

Left-hander José Quintana (11-6, 3.88) starts for the Brewers while right-hander Miles Mikolas (7-10, 4.84) counters for the Cardinals.

Two opportunities missed by the offense

With Aaron Ashby and Grant Anderson doing a nice job of keeping it 3-2 and bridging the game to Chad Patrick in the seventh, Milwaukee’s offense was set up nicely in the sixth when pinch-hitter Andrew Vaughn and Brice Turang collected consecutive one-out singles.

But Caleb Durbin struck out and pinch-hitter Blake Perkins flew out, quickly ending the rally.

Danny Jansen then walked to open the bottom of the seventh only to be stranded when Andruw Monasterio struck out, Sal Frelick popped out and Jackson Chourio flew out.

Danny Jansen makes his presence felt

Making the obligatory start behind the plate in place of William Contreras following a night game, Jansen homered to open the bottom of the fifth to pull Milwaukee to within 3-2.

It was Jansen’s first homer since joining the Brewers via trade on July 28 and his first overall since July 20 while he was with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Caleb Durbin breaks up the shutout

With two outs in the fourth, Durbin capped an eight-pitch at-bat with a solo home run to left that narrowed the deficit to 3-1.

The homer marked a new single-season professional high for Durbin, who hit 10 in 90 games in the minors last year.

Quintana, meanwhile, was pulled after four innings, leaving him with his second-shortest start of the season. He allowed four hits, three runs and two walks while striking out a pair over 67 pitches, which was easily a season low for him.

Some bad luck early for the Brewers

A pair of first-inning singles off Mikolas went for naught when with two outs Turang pulled a grounder down the first-base line that appeared to be foul but was ultimately called fair by umpire Jeremie Rehak.

With no recourse, the Brewers turned their attention to the second inning, which ended up being a mess with Thomas Saggese singling and Nolan Gorman doubling off Quintana to open.

Pedro Pagés hit a fly ball to right scoring Saggese, and Gorman tagged and went to third on the play. Sal Frelick uncorked a throw that appeared to be good enough to get Gorman, but the ball hit him on the slide.

Quintana’s problems compounded when he followed up by walking Jordan Walker. José Fermín singled and after a successful double steal, Nathan Church singled off Turang’s glove with the infield in to cap an 11-pitch at-bat and up the St. Louis lead to 3-0.

Lars Nootbaar followed with a walk, although the Brewers did catch a break when Fermín got caught off third and was tagged out in a rundown and Quintana finally finished the inning with a strikeout of Iván Herrera.

All told, Quintana needed 40 pitches to navigate the inning.
