Americas HS baseball team prepares for regional semifinals in Class 5A, Division 1
Americas trailed the entire game in opener of Class 5A, Division 1 baseball playoff series vs. Colleyville Heritage.
ODESSA, Texas — The Americas High School baseball team will have work to do in the regional semifinals of Class 5A, Division 2 UIL baseball playoffs.
On Thursday night at Odessa High School, Colleyville Heritage never trailed and defeated the Trailblazers, 10-2, in the opener of the best two of three series.
Game two is Friday, May 16. Americas must win to avoid being eliminated from the Texas high school baseball championships. The winner of the series advances to the regional finals May 22-24.
How Colleyville Heritage got opening game win
The Panthers score two runs in innings one and four and three runs in innings three and six.
Outfielder Jobe Reed was the leader for the Panthers at the plate with a solo home run, two doubles, a single and three runs scored.
Two throwing errors by Americas also led to a pair of Panthers runs.
Starting pitcher Andrew Goodman picked up the win, going all seven innings and getting out of major trouble in three different innings.
Americas had runners on second and third in the second with one out but left those runners on base. In the third, the Trailblazers stranded a runner on third and in the seventh Americas scored a run but left the bases loaded.
Highlights for Americas in Game 1
Americas’ third baseman Drew Gonzalez had three hits, designated hitter Jyden Jimenez singled in a run in the second and left fielder Jacob Estrada drove in a run in the seventh.
What Americas coach Jesse Munoz said
“We didn’t play well in all three phases of the game,” Munoz said. “We just got outplayed.”
What Americas’ Jayden Jimenez said
“Colleyville Heritage was the better team tonight, but we can comeback and play better,” Jimenez said. “We just have to regroup. We have played a tough schedule all year and we have proven we can play at a high level.”
Up next
The teams play Game 2 at noon CST Friday and if a third game is needed, the two teams will play 30 minutes after the second game.
Clint loses to Brock in Class 4A opener
Clint lost, 16-9, to Brock on Thursday at Midland’s Christensen Stadium in the opening game of the regional semifinals of the Class 4A, Division 2 playoffs.
Clint led 8-6 in the sixth inning but Brock scored nine runs in that inning to pull away.
The series continues at 11 a.m. Friday with Game 2.
