BOSTON — Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he spoke with Nate Eaton about his baserunning mistake that occurred during Boston’s 5-3 loss to the Yankees on Saturday.

Eaton led off the second inning with a walk, but he got caught trying to advance from first to third base on Nick Sogard’s bloop single to left field.

Left fielder Jasson Domínguez easily threw him out at third base for the first out. Connor Wong followed Sogard’s single with a double, and so the miscue cost Boston a run.

“We talked about it,” Cora said before Boston’s series finale against New York on Sunday. “You make a decision. He made a decision. The one thing I told him, I said, ‘If you go, just go.’ Because at one point he started looking back, right? Obviously, Domínguez is an arm that we will challenge, but we’re at Fenway Park. It’s closer than other stadiums.

“But we like running. He did it in Sacramento,” Cora added. “He was very aggressive against (Brent) Rooker. Right away he took off. But in that one, I mentioned it to him yesterday. I said, ‘Hey, if you made a decision, you made a decision. Don’t slow down. Don’t look back. Try to get there.’ I don’t know if he was going to get it, but we talk about situations. We’re not gonna second guess the situation. We’ll explain it, and we move on.”
