DRUMMONDVILLE, Que. – McGill jumped out early with a pair of first-inning runs but Collège de Drummondville capitalized on four Redbirds errors to rally for a 4-2 victory and complete a doubleheader sweep in men’s baseball at Stade Jacques-Desautels, Sunday.
Although McGill outhit Drummondville 7-6, the defensive miscues proved costly. The Redbirds left nine men on base, compared with 19 stranded by the Voltigeurs.
McGill, which dropped to 0-8, looked to be on pace for its first win when shortstop William Durnford singled, stole second and later scored on a line-drive single by catcher Robert Glusker, who went 1-for-3 on the day. Third baseman Eli Brisman followed with a base hit to left that plated Glusker. Brisman finished 2-for-3, while Durnford matched him at 2-for-3 with a stolen base to lead the Redbirds’ seven-hit output.
The Voltigeurs (4-1) quickly erased that deficit with two runs in the bottom of the second. Guillaume Aupin drew a walk and later crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice, while Xavier Beaudry knocked in the tying run with a groundout. One inning later, Drummondville surged ahead for good when Aupin dropped a bunt single that drove in two more runs after consecutive McGill infield errors. Aupin finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs, while teammate Dany Allen went 2-for-2 with a walk and a double to fuel the hosts’ six-hit attack.
On the mound, McGill starter Nathaniel Factor was saddled with the loss after yielding six hits and four runs — three earned — in five innings of work. He walked five and fanned three on 92 pitches before reliever Xavier Felx retired the side on three groundouts in the sixth.
Drummondville countered with a committee approach. Starter Alexandre Sevigny lasted just 1.1 innings, surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk. Félix Côté took over and blanked McGill through three innings, allowing two hits and striking out two to pick up the win. Joël Boisnard-Coté recorded two outs in the sixth, and Allen capped his productive day at the plate by striking out a batter in the seventh to secure the save.
The final totals saw McGill with two runs, seven hits, four errors and nine left on base, while Drummondville collected four runs, six hits, no errors and stranded 19.
The Redbirds will look to regroup on Sept. 17 when they travel across town to confront the Université de Montréal in an 8 p.m. start at Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard.
