MIAMI — Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Báez was injured in the strangest way in the second inning against the Miami Marlins im the series opener at loanDepot Park on Friday, Sept. 12.

Right-hander Sandy Alcantara was on the mound for the Marlins and threw a changeup that was high and inside. Báez swung at it and fouled the ball off his forehead, with the ball popping his helmet off.

Báez was in obvious pain and collapsed near home plate. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch and a trainer tended to Báez and helped him walk off the field. There was no blood, but Baez seemed to be pointing at the left side of his face.

Trey Sweeney was put into the game to replace Báez, inheriting an 0-2 count with two outs. He struck out swinging.
