BOSTON — After dropping the first two games of the series, the Red Sox beat the Yankees, 6-4 to strengthen their grip on a playoff spot and move within 1½ games of the Yankees in the wild card race.
Boston would be the No. 5 seed as the second wild card if the standings hold and would play the Yankees in the Bronx in the best-of-three wild card round.
