A week ago, social media was full of funny memes about a Phillies fan who seemingly bullied another fan into giving her a baseball at a game.
That woman was given the moniker “Phillies Karen” as the entire scene played out in video clips that were widely shared by sports fans.
While there are plenty of awful people in the world, there also are a number of good folks, too. Even in Philadelphia where sports fans have been known to get a bad rap.
Here’s the story of one of those good people.
When Royals catcher Salvador Perez hit his 300th career home run on Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park, a fan in a Phillies jersey made a great catch in the stands, and it appeared he was ready to give the ball to a young spectator.
MLB shared video of the home run and the fan’s grab.
That fan didn’t end up giving the ball away to a kid. He made sure that Perez got it.
FanDuel Sports Kansas City’s Joel Goldberg shared this on X: “In a true sign of ;Brotherly Love,’ the 40-year old Phillies fan who caught the Salvador Perez ball gave it up for nothing but just asked to meet Salvy and say hi after the game. He told me he loves the game of baseball too much to ask for more.”
How cool is that?
The Royals confirmed the Phillies fan got to meet with Perez on Saturday night. And the Royals gave that Philly supporter some KC swag for his generosity.
And Perez now has that milestone baseball despite hitting that home run on the road.
