Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star outfielder Corbin Carroll was fully confident when describing the team’s chances at making the postseason on Monday.
“Everyone has counted us out and we are like ‘why not us,’” Carroll told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo. “I think the mood (in the clubhouse) has been ‘why not us’ and to keep stacking these wins and make something incredible happen.”
The Diamondbacks are just two games back of the New York Mets for the final Wild Card Spot in the National League as they are set to begin a critical three game series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
The D-backs have been one of the best teams since the MLB trade deadline, posting a 24-16 record despite Arizona trading several key players at the deadline, including Merrill Kelly, Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor.
Carroll, who was named the team’s Roberto Clemente Award nominee on Monday, has been one of the top hitters for the D-backs this season, slashing .255/.337/.879 with 30 home runs, 76 RBIs and 28 stolen bases.
Carroll credits his team with fighting through adversity this season, including the deadline trades and injuries.
“That’s what happens because that’s baseball. It’s a crazy game and I am really proud of our guys,” Carroll said. “They’ve done a good job fighting throughout this whole year regardless of what the results have been and that’s what allowed us to still be playing meaningful baseball at this point.”
Corbin Carroll credits Torey Lovullo on managing job
Carroll credited manager Torey Lovullo as a key reason the team is playing meaningful games this late in the season.
“That job is a thankless job. When things are going poorly, it’s because of you and when things are going well its’ because of the players that are playing well,” Carroll said. “I commend him on the job he has done and he’s a huge reason why we are at the point we are now.”
