SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners’ remarkable turnaround this September hasn’t just been about home runs, pitching, or late-inning heroics—it’s been about magic. Or at least, that’s how fans are choosing to explain it.
On Sept. 5, Twitter user @notB0bR055 confessed to paying $19.99 to an Etsy witch to “unfuck the Mariners.” The spell, cast by Etsy seller SpellByLuna, promised “same-day casting and fast results.” Hours later, Seattle blew out the Atlanta Braves in back-to-back games, 10-2 and 18-2, setting the stage for a run that has defied reason.
Since the spell, the Mariners have won 10 straight, their longest winning streak since 2022, and vaulted into first place in the American League West. Their playoff odds, which had cratered earlier in the month, are now back to 96.4 percent, according to FanGraphs.
Tuesday night in Kansas City only deepened the legend. Cal Raleigh, the All-Star catcher known as “The Big Dumper,” launched his 55th and 56th home runs of the season. The first broke Mickey Mantle’s 1961 record for most homers in a season by a switch hitter. The second tied Ken Griffey Jr.’s Mariners single-season record. Teammate Dominic Canzone added three home runs of his own in a 12-5 rout of the Royals.
The Mariners’ social media team leaned into the supernatural after the early wins, cheekily shouting out “the etsy witch” in all caps. Fans have since dubbed SpellByLuna the team’s unofficial good-luck charm, even as the seller has temporarily suspended her listings.
Skeptics may call it coincidence. Optimists point to belief. But as SpellByLuna wrote in her confirmation note to the fan: “Now all you need to do is stay positive and accept the manifestation of the spell.”
In a season that looked destined for collapse, Seattle has instead found its storybook twist. Whether the streak lasts another week or carries them into October glory, the “Etsy Witch” has already secured her place in Mariners lore.
