The surging Cleveland Guardians look to make it six in a row as they continue their three-game series with the Detroit Tigers tonight at Comerica Park.
Cleveland opened the series with a 7–5 extra-inning win last night, breaking a 3–3 tie in the top of the 10th with a four-run outburst. Steven Kwan’s RBI double brought in Brayan Rocchio to put the Guardians back on top, and they added three more runs.
The Tigers clawed back with a Spencer Torkelson two-run homer in the bottom half of the 10th, but the rally fell short, sealing Cleveland’s fifth straight win.
The Guardians once again leaned on strong pitching, with Joey Cantillo limiting Detroit to one run over four innings. He has now posted a stellar 1.23 ERA over his last five starts.
With the victory, Cleveland pulled within 2.5 games of the Boston Red Sox for the final AL Wild Card spot and 5.5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central.
They’ll face Detroit five more times, including today, still giving them a shot in the division race. They close the season against the Texas Rangers, who are only one game behind them in the standings.
Tonight, the Guardians turn to Gavin Williams (10–5, 3.16 ERA), who has been outstanding of late. In his last seven starts, he’s gone 4–1 with a 2.68 ERA. He dominated the Tigers in his only outing against them this year, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out eight.
Jack Flaherty (8–13, 4.69 ERA) gets the start for the Tigers. While he’s piled up 178 strikeouts in 151.2 innings, inconsistency has plagued him. Over his last seven starts, he’s 2–3 with a 5.70 ERA.
He is, however, coming off a strong outing against the New York Yankees, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. Flaherty was also solid in his lone start against Cleveland, allowing three runs across 6.2 innings.
Prediction
The Guardians have momentum, the hotter offense, and the more reliable starter on the mound. While Flaherty is capable of missing bats, Williams and Cleveland’s pitching depth should be enough to hold Detroit’s lineup in check.
Prediction: Guardians 5, Tigers 2
